Skis, stargazing and…. haggis on the menu this weekend

VERNON – If you’re looking for something to brighten the cloudy weekend Vernon has in store, there’s everything from art shows to bonfires to choose from.

Environment Canada is calling for cloud and fog over the weekend with highs hovering around 1 C.

Gallery Vertigo is showcasing art by Vernon school district students. The exhibit runs until February 7.

Businesses might want to get started decorating for the Winter Carnival’s Best Decorated Premises Contest with a January 31 deadline.

The Okanagan Regional Library has a variety of events happening, including Family Literacy Day, storytime and an adult book club.

Vernon RCMP will be at Silver Star Mountain on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. engraving skis and snowboards for free.

The Vernon Public Art Gallery has a few different events going on, including the Respect Lives Here Community Mosaic Project on Saturday, where participants create ceramic tiles that will be part of a larger installation at Okanagan College. There’s also an artist talk and a felting workshop.

Stargazers will want to head to the Okanagan Science Centre Saturday for a Winter Skies Planetarium show.

Whether you’ve been carving the slopes all day, skating at the pond or just want to get some mountain air, Silver Star is hosting a bonfire night. 

Hungry for some haggis? Check out the Robbie Burns dinner at the Vernon Recreation Centre for Scottish food, music and dancing. 

The Vernon Jazz Club is also hosting music that night. Latin singer, songwriter and guitarist Stephanie Pedraza will be on stage at 8 p.m. 

Popular local bands Paperboy and Naked Ghosts, as well as Vancouver band Heard in the Mountains, will be playing at the Talking Donkey Saturday night.
