Kelowna house fire traced to electrical appliance

UPDATE: House fire likely started from laundry machine

The Kelowna Fire Department is investigating a fire that broke out on the top floor of a Carruthers Street residence. Platoon Capt. Kelly Stephens says, "crews arrived on scene and found heavy smoke coming from the attic.”

“It turns out they had an electrical issue,” he said, adding “we think it might be a washer or dryer but it's still too early to tell.”

Crews were quickly extinguished the fire and are now ruling out any other possible hotspots. While there were four firetrucks on scene and one ambulance, Stephens says no one was injured.

"There was people home and everybody was out upon our arrival and all accounted for,” he says.

Reports of flames coming from the roof at a home on Curruthers Street in Kelowna was quickly extinguished by firecrews this afternoon.

It's believed the fire started in the attic, but the source of the fire is unknown at this time. Residents were home when the fire began but evacuated and there were no injuries.

Four trucks responded to the call at Carruthers and Sutherland. The fire is out but the some crew members are still on scene checking for hot spots.
