Kelowna has 8 of the 10 worst intersections for car crashes in the Southern Interior

Whether you call it Harvey Avenue or Highway 97, the major roadway through Kelowna and West Kelowna had eight of the 10 worst intersections in the Southern Interior last year.

Leading the way in 2019 was Harvey Avenue and Spall Road with 100 collisions, according to a new database posted by ICBC.

That was followed by the highway intersecting with Dilworth Drive with 88 collisions, Highway 33 with 74, and descending numbers of crashes through Banks Road (69), Leckie Road (63), Burtch Road (61), Cooper Road (60) and Gordon Drive (59).

In West Kelowna, the intersection of Boucherie Road and Horizon Drive with the highway ranks ninth on the list with 59 crashes.

Two intersections that did not involve the highway were also on the list. The Benvoulin Road, Dilworth Drive and Springfield Road intersection was third on the list with 84 crashes.

The Benvoulin-KLO roads intersection ranked fifth with 63 crashes.

As for the rest of the Southern Interior, the worst intersection in Kamloops is Columbia Street West and Summit Drive with 50 collisions. For Vernon it was 25 Avenue at 32 Street with 28 crashes while Penticton’s worst intersection in 2019 was Channel Parkway, Fairview Road and Green Mountain Roads with 33.

Still, at 100 crashes, the Spall Road intersection ranks well behind the number 10 spot in the Lower Mainland. Boundary Road and Kingsway at the Burnaby/Vancouver border had 162 crashes. The worst intersection in the province with 252 crashes was at 200 Street and 88 Avenue with on and off ramps to Highway 1 in Langley.

The Victoria area had similar crash ratings to Kelowna with the Admirals Road, Galloping Goose Trail, McKenzie Avenue and Highway 1 intersection accounting for 101 crashes.

Nanaimo was the only Vancouver Island city outside the greater Victoria area to make the top 10 list with two intersections coming in at eighth and tenth.

In the North Central region, Prince George topped that list at the Highways 16 and 97 intersection with a mere 53 crashes. Nine of the 10 worst intersections in the North are in Prince George with one, ranked at number eight, being in Fort St. John.
