Kamloops landfill tender under budget

The City of Kamloops continues to save money as the most recent tender has once again come under budget – this time by just over $200,000.

The current contract with S.S.G. Holdings Ltd. is set to expire at the end of June and three bids were submitted for the operation of the Mission Flats and Barnhartvale landfills to begin in July, with the lowest bid coming in almost $1-million less than the highest bid.

The low bid of $993,450 from the current operator is the one before council this week. The agreement is for four years with the option of two, two-year extensions. The level of experience and previous comparable company work were considered in the recommendation; S.S.G. Holdings Ltd., based out of Maple Ridge, also manages seven other solid waste sites, including the ones in Vernon, Armstrong and Lumby.

In Kamloops the domestic, commercial, institutional, municipal and light industrial sectors generate about 50,000 tonnes of landfill waste annually.

Earlier this month council agreed to a bid for the Mission Flats lift station, which also came in about $70,000 under budget.
