Clark to make announcement about West Kelowna power needs

WEST KELOWNA – Premier Christy Clark will be in West Kelowna Thursday afternoon to make an announcement regarding the district's power supply.

West Kelowna is one of the few areas supplied by a single transmission line, which runs from Merritt to Shannon Lake. In October a fire atop one of the poles left thousands without power for nine hours and the line was threatened during the Smith Creek fire as well.

Mayor Doug Findlater said late last month he is calling for support from affected jurisdictions ahead of the release of a B.C. Hydro study.

“B.C. Hydro and I differ on risk ranking,” Findlater said. “They describe it on the basis of reliability, we view it on the basis of consequences.”

On Thursday the Premier will make an announcement from the Westbank substation on Shannon Lake Rd. where it is anticipated the results of the study will be released.

Clark will be joined by Penticton MLA Dan Ashton and B.C. Hydro CEO Jessica McDonald.
