Financial help available for those impacted by spring flooding in Kamloops and area

Those in Kamloops, and some surrounding areas, affected by flooding this spring can apply for financial aid if they were unable to obtain insurance to cover disaster-related losses.

Regions qualifying for this relief include Kamloops and Thompson-Nicola Regional District Electoral Areas E, I and J, according to a Ministry of Public Safety news release.

The ministry said residents, small business owners, farmers and charitable organizations affected by flooding from April 20 to July 7, 2020 can apply to Emergency Management B.C. for disaster financial assistance online.

Successful applicants will receive 80 per cent of the total damage claim exceeding $1,000 to a maximum of $300,000.

Seasonal or recreational properties do not qualify, in addition to luxury items, hot tubs, patios, pools, garden tools, recreational items and landscaping, the ministry said.

Small business owners and farm owners must demonstrate that their farms and businesses are their primary source of income, and charities must provide a benefit of service to the community.

Local governments can also receive financial aid to replace or rebuild essential public infrastructures and for incremental costs associated with their emergency operations centre. 

All claims must be submitted by Nov. 3, 2020.
