More high temperature records broken in the Okanagan

More daily high temperature records fell for the third straight day in the Okanagan, as a strong high pressure system continues to dominate the region.

Environment Canada meteorologist Gregg Walters says Vernon, Kelowna, Summerland and Penticton set new daily high records yesterday, Aug. 18.

Vernon reached a high of 35.9 Celsius, breaking the previous record of 35.5 C in 2010.

Kelowna reached a high of 37 C yesterday, beating the previous record high for Aug.18 of 36.7 C, set in 1967.

Summerland’s high of 37.1 C topped that community’s previous record high of 36.7 C, also set in 1967.

Penticton baked in 37.5 C heat yesterday, beating the old record of 35.5 C, also set in 1967.

Firefighters working the Mount Christie wildfire near Penticton will have to wait until Friday for showers in the forecast. Walters says more sun is forecast today with a high of 32 C, and temperatures cooling to 28 C on Thursday.

Showers are anticipated Friday with a high of 27 C expected.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
