5-year-old boy killed by fallen tree in Chilliwack

A five-year-old Chilliwack boy died yesterday after a tree fell, also injuring another person.

Police are working with the B.C. Coroners Service to investigate the Chilliwack child's death.

According to a release from Chilliwack RCMP, officers responded to a report around 12:45 p.m. that a tree fell on a group of people walking along Kingfisher Trail, Yarrow, Aug. 18.

Officers arrived on scene to find the boy died of his injuries. A 22-year-old Abbotsford woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital.

"This group was local to the Chilliwack area and consisted of children being supervised on a day hike along the trail," Corporal Mike Rail said in a press release.

"RCMP Victim Services is engaged with the families of the group and child."

The investigation is still in its early evidence-gathering phase.
