Kamloops city council adopts electric vehicle and e-bike initiative

Kamloops city council will be moving forward with their plan to bring more electric vehicles and e-bikes to the city.

Council authorized the adoption of the Electric Vehicle and E-Bike Strategy at a meeting Tuesday, Aug. 25. according to a City of Kamloops media release. However, only action items with no costs attached will move forward in 2021.

Other actions identified within the strategy will be revisited as funding becomes available, the City said.

“As more residents and organizations make the shift to low-carbon and active transportation, our community greenhouse gas emissions will decrease,” Glen Cheetham, sustainability services supervisor, said in the release. “Taking action to reduce transportation emissions is a key priority as they represent 66 per cent of our community’s total emissions.”

Electric vehicles and e-bikes are zero-emission vehicles and have low operating costs, the City said.

Council plans to prepare the community for a transition to electric transportation in the next several years.

The City will install electric vehicle and e-bike charging stations for residences, workplaces and public spaces to facilitate the transition. More cycling infrastructure will also be established to encourage bike use.
