The full Flower moon is a micromoon in Kamloops, Okanagan
May’s full moon is called a Flower Moon because of all the blooming flowers in spring, but observers may have to contend with clouds to see it fully illuminated next week.
The moon reaches peak illumination at 9:56 p.m. on Monday, May 12, appearing full the night before and after.
There are many different names for the full moon in May that come from Native American, colonial American and European sources, according to the Old Farmers Almanac. Other names for the full Flower Moon include Budding Moon, Planting Moon and Frog Moon.
This moon will be a micromoon, meaning it will be at its furthest point from Earth in its elliptical orbit, appearing slightly smaller than other full moons.
Rain and cloud are in the overnight forecast for Kamloops and the Okanagan on Sunday and Monday night with the best night for sky watching on Tuesday when cloudy periods are predicted.
For optimal viewing and photography opportunities, sky watchers should find a vantage point high up in elevation away from city light pollution, and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness for half and hour.
