Vernon emergency crews pull person from downtown culvert

Vernon RCMP along with firefighters pulled a person from a culvert in downtown Vernon yesterday.

According to a City of Vernon media release shortly after 2:30 p.m. Sept. 23, emergency services received a call that an individual was in the water at the Lower BX Creek at the 3400 block of 35 Avenue. The report said a person had entered the culvert but had not come back out.

"Firefighters worked with members of the RCMP, City of Vernon Utilities, Bylaw Compliance and BC Ambulance Service to close the area to traffic and survey the creek and storm sewer system underground," the release says.

City staff used a camera that helped emergency responders find an individual below ground, who was then led out of the culvert and out of the water. The individual was then assessed by the B.C. Ambulance Service.

The RCMP is currently investigating the circumstances.
