Fire at Kamloops landfill billows dangerous smoke

Possibly toxic black smoke was seen billowing from the Kamloops garbage dump this morning.

The Mission Flats landfill was closed before 7 a.m. today, May 14, as firefighters responded to the blaze. It won’t reopen until tomorrow, at the earliest.

The city said smoke from the fire may be toxic and residents have been asked to avoid the area and nearby households have been told to keep their windows closed.

Deputy fire chief Ryan Cail told iNFOnews.ca crews were quick to knock the fire down, but it will take at least a day for heavy equipment to stir up the material and uncover the remain hotspots.

What caused the fire in the metals area of the yard isn’t clear, but Cail said fire investigators are looking into it.
