West Kelowna firefighters battle brush fire

West Kelowna firefighters battled a Friday night brush fire caused by an unauthorized campfire on Mount Boucherie.

West Kelowna Fire Rescue responded at 10 p.m., Oct. 2, to a blaze was located about one-third of the way up Mount Boucherie.

The rank two fire was approximately 30 by 30 meters in size, located in steep terrain and was starting to move uphill. Firefighters were able to connect to a hydrant at the bottom of the hill and advance hose lines up to the fire, according to the fire department's press release.

The fire took approximately 30 minutes to fully extinguish, after which crews dug a handguard around the fire’s perimeter, according to the fire department.

The fire was caused by a campfire that escaped its protective ring and ignited the surrounding grass and brush, according to the press release.

The fire department warns that conditions remain dry and potentially hazardous.

The fire was knocked down with the assistance of 14 personnel in four fire apparatus, a safety and a command unit.
