Salmon Arm RCMP fleet gets first EV
Salmon Arm RCMP got a new truck and it’s all electric.
Its 2024 Ford F150 Lightning was added to the fleet as part of the federal agency’s zero emission pilot project for its fleets, according to a July 8 news release.
“This is an exciting trial for our detachment,” detachment commander Staff Sgt. Simon Scott said in the release. “Testing an electric vehicle in day-to-day policing helps us understand how these new technologies can support policing services while reducing our environmental footprint.”
The new truck will be seen patrolling Salmon Arm neighbourhoods and the surrounding area.
Though it’s a first for the Shuswap area detachment, it will be far from the last. The federal fleet overhaul aims to replace half of its gas-powered light-duty vehicles with “zero-emission vehicles” by 2030, continuing to 100 per cent by 2035, according to the federal government website.
