Penticton Indian Band voices disapproval of proposed Spiller Road subdivision

The Penticton Indian Band has added its voice to those opposed to a residential development off Spiller Road northeast of Penticton.

The Band issued a press release today, Oct. 19, expressing its opposition to a proposed 320-unit residential neighbourhood development at 1050 Spiller Rd. by Canadian Horizons.

"The snPink’tn people have and continue to utilize this area for food, social and ceremonial practices," Chief Chad Eneas said in the release. “Current (food, social and ceremonial) practices cannot coexist with the proposed residential development."

Eneas said it will lead directly to the permanent extinguishment of syilx Nation/Penticton Indian Band food, social and ceremonial rights.

The Band has opposed the development for the past three years and have notified Canadian Horizons and the B.C. government of their position.

“We affirm our position of rejection," Chief Eneas said. "The Penticton Indian Band does not approve, consent or in any other manner agree to the proposed development.”

Agriculturalists in the vicinity of Spiller Road drove their tractors to Penticton City Hall in September as part of a protest against the development, which they said would increase traffic on Naramata Road and ruin the character of the Naramata Bench.

Canadian Horizons has not yet responded to a request for comment.
