iN VIDEO: Kelowna high school shows what it means to be ‘straight out of Rutland’

A group of Rutland teachers, students and Central Okanagan school district staff have put together a commercial showcasing the community’s pride.

The team, a group of admin staff, tossed around ideas while taking a video lesson, to tell a story about Rutland Senior Secondary. They settled on making a commercial and wanted to showcase what the students are learning, said vice-principal Jarret Atkins.

Atkins said they wanted to spin the story of Rutland, which sometimes gets a bad rap, into a positive one. Straight Outta Rutland is also a well-known slogan in the community, and was originally created by the owners of Valley Contract Screenprinting.

“There are so many great things about our school that a lot of people don’t know that we’re doing here and we wanted to showcase that,” Atkins said. “These students are Rutland kids and they’re all doing great things so they’re straight out of Rutland. It’s basically saying we know what you’re saying about us, but we’re going to make it a positive.”

The video showcases students performing different activities and ways of learning, from cooking, acting and filming to dancing and more.

The video was created by school district videographer Chris Velasco and the filming was done back in June with a handful of students and staff.

The video is available on YouTube and plans are to make it a part of a series of commercials.
