UPDATE: It’s already the snowiest October day ever in Penticton

Today’s weather in Kamloops and the Okanagan will go down in history as one of the snowiest, if not the snowiest day ever recorded.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says the latest report out of Penticton has 11 centimetres of snow falling today, Oct. 23.

“The previous record was 10.9 cm in 1925, which fell on Oct. 28 that year,” Lundquist says, adding the official tally won’t be available until tomorrow. “It will be among the top two of the most snowiest of any day in October in that city.”

The record for Kelowna’s snowiest October day is also being threatened today.

Kelowna’s record is 12.7 cm, which was set on Oct. 26, 1939, and also on Oct. 28 in 1925.

“There’s a tie there," Lundquist says.

So at the end of the day if Kelowna reached more than 12.7 cm, it will be in first place, but right now at 10 cm, the Central Okanagan city is in fourth place, he says.

Kamloops’s snowiest October day was Oct 23, 1933, when 20.3 cm fell.

“They are for sure in second place, (Kamloops has) had 11 cm so far today,” he says.

Vernon didn’t see as much snow as Kamloops and the rest of the Okanagan. Lundquist says around 7 cm has fallen there.
