B.C. isn’t in a second-wave of COVID-19 — the Fraser Health region is

B.C.'s so-called second wave of COVID-19 might be better described as the Fraser Health region's second wave.

Since Oct. 9 there have been 2,089 new cases of COVID-19 in B.C. with 1,463, or 70 per cent, in the Fraser Health region.

In her COVID-19 update yesterday, Oct. 22, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry noted that most of the new cases came from events such as weddings and funerals — mainly in that health region.

The region has about 36 per cent of B.C.’s population and is home to the most people of any of the province’s five health regions with 1.8 million residents.

There were 1,058 cases in the Fraser South sub-region which includes Surrey, Langley, White Rock and Delta.

On the northern side of the river there were 252 new cases and the eastern part of the region, roughly from Abbotsford to Hope, had 153 cases in that two week period.

By comparison, the entire Interior Health region had 77 cases, with the majority (46) being in the Okanagan and another 26 in the Thompson-Cariboo-Shuswap subregion.

Vancouver Island, which is geographically smaller than the Interior but has a larger population, only had 24 cases while the Northern Health region had 35.

Which leaves the Vancouver Coastal health region with 490 cases.
