Full Sturgeon moon this week in Okanagan, Kamloops
The full Sturgeon Moon is reaching peak illumination in skies over Kamloops and the Okanagan late this week and into the weekend and Mother Nature is cooperating.
The summertime moon will be at its brightest just before midnight Friday, Aug. 8, appearing full the evenings before and after.
The Sturgeon Moon is named after the giant lake sturgeon of the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain that were an important food staple for Native Americans in the region who caught them in the summer, according to The Old Farmers Almanac.
Other First Nation’s names for the August full moon include Flying Up Moon, Harvest Moon and Black Cherries Moon.
The forecast for Kamloops and the Okanagan is calling for cloudy periods Friday night but clear skies for the rest of the weekend.
The best way to view the moon is from a spot away from light pollution where there is a clear view of the sky, and look to the southeast.
