Yelich’s two homers lead Brewers to record-tying 13th straight win

CINCINNATI (AP) — Christian Yelich had two homers among his four hits and drove in five runs as the Milwaukee Brewers overcame a seven-run deficit to beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-8 Friday night for their club record-tying 13th straight victory.

The Reds chased Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski — making his first start since July 28 — with a seven-run seventh inning to take an 8-1 lead.

Yelich homered leading off the second against Nick Martinez for Milwaukee’s first run. He had an RBI double in the third before Andrew Vaughn hit his 14th homer — a three-run shot — and Brice Turang’s RBI double to cut it to 8-6. Yelich had a two-run single in the fourth to tie it at 8-all and then hit his 26th homer — a one-out, solo shot off Scott Barlow (6-1) in the sixth to give the Brewers the lead.

Brandon Lockridge went 3 for 5 and doubled off Sam Moll with two outs in the seventh before scoring on a wild pitch for an insurance run.

Misiorowski loaded the bases with one out in the second on a hit batter and two walks and left after walking Spencer Steer to force in a run. Elly De La Cruz had the first hit in the inning — a two-run double off DL Hall for a 4-1 lead. Four straight singles increased the lead to 8-1.

Misiorowski was charged with five runs on four hits and three walks in 1 1/3 innings hours after coming off the injured list. Nick Mears (4-3) pitched a scoreless fifth. Trevor Megill struck out two in the ninth for his 29th save. Six relievers combined to retire the final 23 Reds in order.

PIRATES 3, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Jack Suwinski hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth inning to give Pittsburgh a win over struggling Chicago.

Suwinski, a Chicago native, hit Daniel Palencia’s (1-3) 1-1 fastball the opposite way, into the left-field bleachers for his third homer. The Pirates ended a five-game losing steak and sent the Cubs to their fourth loss in five games.

Pete Crow-Armstrong broke out of a 3-for-41 slump by going 3 for 3 with his first RBI since July 30. Crow-Armstrong also was hit by a pitch and scored a run. The Cubs All-Star was thrown out twice on the bases; trying to stretch a single to double in the fourth and was caught stealing in the ninth after leading off with a single.

Andrew McCutchen and Isaiah Kiner-Falefa each had an RBI double.

The Cubs entered eight games behind surging NL Central-leading Milwaukee. Matt Shaw added a sac fly.

Dennis Santana (4-4) got the final four outs for the win.

Pirates rookie Braxton Ashcraft allowed one run on three hits in five innings, striking our four and walking none in his third and longest start

Cubs starter Colin Rea allowed one run on three hits in five innings.

PHILLIES 6, NATIONALS 2

WASHINGTON (AP) — Kyle Schwarber hit his 43rd homer, a tiebreaking, three-run shot in the seventh inning, and Philadelphia beat Washington to snap a three-game skid.

Bryce Harper followed Schwarber with a drive over the center-field fence, the sixth time this season the Phillies have homered back-to-back. Both ex-Nats were cheered by a pro-Philly crowd of 35,143, and Schwarber got “M-V-P!” chants when he batted in the ninth.

Phillies closer Jhoan Duran, pitching in a non-save situation in the ninth, took a sharp grounder off his right foot from Paul DeJong and came up limping. After a lengthy visit by trainers, he rode off the field in the Nationals’ bullpen cart.

After a solid start by Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore, the National League East-leading Phillies feasted on last-place Washington’s inexperienced bullpen. Clayton Beeter (0-2) walked two batters in the seventh and gave way to Konnor Pilkington, who hung a 1-0 slider that Schwarber sent 456 feet into the right-field stands.

Phillies ace Zack Wheeler was limited to five innings for the second consecutive start. He allowed two runs on four hits, including the third career homer by Nationals rookie Daylen Lile. Tanner Banks (4-2) pitched a scoreless sixth.

BRAVES 2, GUARDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) — Hurston Waldrep pitched six scoreless innings in a combined two-hitter and Nacho Alvarez Jr. and Michael Harris II each drove in a run, giving Atlanta a victory over Cleveland.

Waldrep (3-0) allowed two hits, both to Steven Kwan, in matching his longest outing of the season. The right-hander struck out a career-high seven and walked two before being followed by Daysbel Hernandez and Tyler Kinley.

Raisel Iglesias the ninth for his 18th save in 23 opportunities, giving the Braves their third straight win. The Guardians were shut out for the 12th time and fell one game behind the Yankees for the final American League wild-card spot.

Alvarez drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth off Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo (3-3), scoring Ozzie Albies. Harris singled home pinch-runner Eli White in the ninth against Carlos Hernández.

RED SOX 2, MARLINS 1

BOSTON (AP) — Trevor Story bounced one through the drawn-in infield with the bases loaded and nobody out in the ninth inning — just Boston’s third hit of the game — and the Red Sox beat Miami.

It was Boston’s 10th walk-off win of the season, the most in the majors.

Josh Simpson (2-2) walked Roman Anthony and Alex Bregman to start the ninth. Jarren Duran was squared around to bunt, but Simpson hit him with a pitch to load the bases. Calvin Faucher came in to face Story, who hit a chopper past the second baseman to end it.

Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara retired the first 12 batters before Story singled to lead off the fifth inning. Alcantara retired the next five as well before Anthony walked with two out in the sixth and scored to make it 1-1 on Bregman’s double.

Aroldis Chapman (4-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win.

MARINERS 11, METS 9

NEW YORK (AP) — Cal Raleigh hit his major league-leading 46th homer, sparked a five-run seventh inning with his first double in over a month and Seattle set a team record with nine doubles to beat skidding New York.

Raleigh hit a two-run shot to the second deck in left field and became the first player to reach 100 RBIs this season to give the Mariners a 4-3 lead in the third. He helped the Mariners rally from a 6-5 deficit in the seventh with his first double since June 27 and then doubled again in the eighth.

The comeback helped Seattle overcome two homers by Francisco Lindor. Lindor hit a leadoff homer and then a two-run shot in the fourth for a 5-4 lead. Juan Soto also homered and Francisco Alvarez hit a three-run shot in the eighth but the Mets lost for the 14th time in 16 games.

After Raleigh scored the tying run on a double by Eugenio Suárez off Ryan Helsley (3-4), Dominic Canzone followed with a go-ahead RBI double off Brooks Raley.

Donavan Solano hit an RBI double off the top of the left field wall and rookie Cole Young capped the big inning with a two-run double.

Mitch Garver homered and Julio Rodriguez hit a pair of RBI doubles as the Mariners won for the 10th time in 13 games. Young added an RBI single to get Seattle within one run in the sixth.

Seattle starter Luis Castillo tied a season worst by allowing six runs and nine hits in four innings.

BLUE JAYS 6, RANGERS 5

TORONTO (AP) — Alejandro Kirk hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning and a deciding two-run single in the eighth in Toronto’s comeback victory over Texas.

Kirk singled with the bases loaded in the eighth to help the Blue Jays (72-51) overcome a three-run deficit. Before the catcher’s at-bat, reliever Phil Matton (2-5) walked Daulton Varsho with the bases loaded.

Texas’ Marcus Semien hit a two-run homer in the seventh.

Louis Varland (4-3) got the win in relief, and Jeff Hoffman finished for his 28th save.

Texas star Jacob deGrom pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits with no walks and five strikeouts.

Kyle Higashioka hit a three-run homer for Texas in the second inning.

ROYALS 3, WHITE SOX 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Noah Cameron pitched into the sixth inning, Salvador Perez hit a go-ahead homer, and Kansas City beat Chicago.

The Royals are 18-3 against the White Sox since the start of last season, including a four-game sweep of Chicago in May.

Cameron (7-5) set the Royals rookie record at Kauffman Stadium by running his scoreless streak to 19 1/3 innings early on. And when Lenyn Sosa homered off him with two outs in the fourth, Cameron set down the next four batters.

Cameron loaded the bases with one out in the fifth, but John Schreiber came in and got Sosa to line into an inning-ending double play.

Carlos Estévez struck out the side in the ninth, finishing 3 2/3 scoreless innings by the Royals bullpen and earning his 31st save.

Aaron Civale (3-8) gave up three straight singles in the first as Kansas City took a 1-0 lead. He allowed one more hit until the fourth, when Perez sent a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall to make it 2-1.

ORIOLES 7, ASTROS 0

HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie right-hander Brandon Young lost his bid for the first perfect game in Baltimore history with four outs remaining in a win over Houston.

Young retired the first 23 batters he faced, only to have his shot at history end on slow grounder to the third base side by Houston second baseman Ramon Urìas.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Urìas, facing the Orioles for the first time since being traded last month, hit a 56 mph grounder between the mound and third base line. Young fielded the ball, but his off-balanced throw sailed wide of first base. Urías was awarded an infield single.

Young struck out the next batter to end the eighth. His eight innings pitched were a career high, and he matched his career best with six strikeouts

A native of Lumberton, Texas, less than 100 miles northeast of Houston, Young entered the game 0-6 with a 6.70 ERA through the first 10 starts of his big league career.

Yaramil Hiraldo retired the side in order in the ninth to preserve the Orioles first one-hitter since May 24, 2024.

Astros starter Framber Valdez (11-6) kept the Orioles in check until the fourth when Colby Mayo hit a two-out, solo home run.

YANKEES 4, CARDINALS 3

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered and Luis Gil pitched one-run ball over 5 1/3 innings to help New York beat St. Louis.

Gil (1-1) allowed one run on four hits and three walks and had four strikeouts in his third start of the season. David Bednar pitched a scoreless ninth for his 19th save of the season and second for the Yankees.

Andre Pallante (6-10) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks and struck out a season-high eight batters in five innings for the Cardinals, who have lost three straight games.

Victor Scott II hit an RBI double down the right field line off Camilo Doval, and Pedro Pagés scored on a wild pitch from Luke Weaver in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Yankees’ lead to 4-3.

Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn hit back-to-back doubles to right field in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard and chase Gil from the game.

Jason Domínguez lined a two-out RBI single to left field in the top of the third inning to put the Yankees ahead 4-0.

TIGERS 7, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Charlie Morton gave up two hits and struck out five over six innings and Detroit scored five runs in the first inning of a win over Minnesota.

Dillon Dingler hit a two-run single in the first, in which the Tigers batted around against Twins starter Pierson Ohl (0-3), who was making his fifth career start. An error by Minnesota second baseman Luke Keaschall led to four unearned runs.

The was enough for 41-year-old right-hander Morton (8-10), who bounced back after a rough start against the Angels his last time out.

Ohl, who faced Detroit earlier this month, lasted only 2 1/3 innings. Four of the seven total runs he surrendered were unearned.

Dingler drove in his third run of the game with a double in the third. Javier Báez also drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers, who are leading the AL Central. Spencer Torkelson reached base three times and scored twice for Detroit.

ROCKIES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3

DENVER (AP) — Hunter Goodman homered, Victor Vodnik struck out two in the ninth inning and Colorado beat Arizona.

Goodman hit his 25th homer — a solo shot off Brandon Pfaadt (12-8) in the first to put the Rockies in front.

Tanner Gordon (3-5) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings for the victory. He gave up 10 runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 13-6 loss to Pfaadt and the Diamondbacks in Phoenix his last time out.

Jimmy Herget fanned four in two innings, and Juan Mejia struck out two in the eighth to set up Vodnik’s fifth save.

Tyler Freeman tripled for Colorado leading off the fifth and scored on Jordan Beck’s two-out double.

Ketel Marte singled leading off the Arizona sixth and Corbin Carroll followed with a four-pitch walk to end Gordon’s day. McCarthy singled off Herget to get the Diamondbacks within a run.

DODGERS 3, PADRES 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mookie Betts had a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the third inning, Teoscar Hernández homered and Los Angeles beat San Diego to tie the Padres atop the NL West.

After three straight hits to open the third, the Dodgers tied it at 1 when Shohei Ohtani grounded into a fielder’s choice to second that scored Michael Conforto. Betts’ sacrifice fly scored Alex Freeland before Ohtani was caught stealing to end the inning.

Hernández homered 400 feet to center off Jeremiah Estrada in the seventh for a 3-1 lead.

The Dodgers ended a four-game skid and the Padres’ five-game winning streak.

Ramón Laureano homered off Clayton Kershaw (7-2) to give the Padres a 1-0 lead in the first. He sent a hanging curveball 400 feet into left where it hit the foul pole.

Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia hit Jose Iglesias and Jake Cronenworth back-to-back and walked Fernando Tatis Jr. to load the bases in the eighth. Luis Arraez’s sacrifice fly cut it to 3-2.

Jack Dreyer got the final out for his second save.

RAYS 7, GIANTS 6

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yandy Diaz had an RBI single in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay rallied to beat San Francisco.

Junior Caminero hit his 35th home run and Chandler Simpson had four hits to help Tampa Bay win for the third time in four games. Diaz had two hits and two RBIs.

Nick Fortes was hit by a pitch from Giants reliever Randy Rodriguez (3-4) to begin the ninth, After Simpson singled for his fourth hit of the night, San Francisco made a 4-5-2 putout before Diaz lofted a bloop single to right.

Edwin Uceta (8-2), the fourth of five relievers utilized by Rays manager Kevin Cash, retired three batters. Pete Fairbanks gave up a leadoff double in the ninth, then set down three straight for his 21st save.

Willy Adames homered for the Giants. San Francisco dropped a season-low four games under .500 at 59-63.

The Rays trailed 3-1 and 6-3 before coming back to win in their final at-bat.

ATHLETICS 10, ANGELS 3

WEST SACRAMENTO (AP) — Colby Thomas, Shea Langeliers and Nick Kurtz homered, rookie Jack Perkins had seven strikeouts in five solid innings and the Athletics beat Los Angeles.

The Athletics snapped an eight-game losing streak, which included seven this season, against the Angels.

Thomas and Kurtz each had three hits and drove in three runs. Thomas, a 24-year-old rookie, hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Kurtz hit a three-run shot that capped the scoring in the eighth.

Perkins (2-2) made his third career start and allowed three runs on five hits with three walks. He allowed three runs on three hits in six innings to beat Orioles 11-3 for first win as a starter his last time out.

Langeliers hit solo homer off Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi (6-8) and added an RBI single. Kikuchi gave up five hits and four runs in four innings.

Travis d’Arnaud doubled to drive in Yoán Moncada in the second for the Angels. Zach Neto homered after Bryce Teodosio walked on four pitches to lead off the fifth to trim their deficit to 4-3.
