Penticton woman wants everyone to ring a bell this COVID-19 Christmas Eve

Penticton resident Lorrie Nelson hopes to spread some Christmas joy by making some seasonal noise this Christmas Eve.

She's jumping on board an idea moving on social media: Asking everyone on Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. to ring a bell for two minutes "to spread Christmas spirit and to help Santa fly that sleigh."

"I love Christmas and I think it’s a great idea. It would be nice to have everyone open their windows or step out on their balconies and ring, it would be like in the spirit of a movie,” Nelson says. 

It's not necessarily related to the pandemic, just recognizing the trying times.

Nelson first heard of the Christmas Eve Jingle 2020 from a friend in Ottawa.

“The original post came from Mississippi Mills,” Nelson says. "I think it’s wonderful, I love Christmas. I mean, we’ve done it for essential workers and I just think we could do it for everyone, the essential workers too."

She’s sharing the idea and has already received some positive feedback.

“I’m hoping people will want to do it. You can get a bell at the dollar store, craft shops, places selling Christmas decorations, pet stores and music stores. One lady contacted me, and said she wanted to use a cowbell,” she says.

Nelson says another person contacted her to say they like the idea, but wouldn't be home Christmas Eve. Nelson suggested ringing a bell at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve, no matter where she was.
