Surrey man pleads guilty for robbing Kelowna pawn shop, kidnapping driver

A Surrey man who fired a gun at police while fleeing a Kelowna jewelry store robbery pleaded guilty to multiple offences in Kelowna Supreme Court this morning.
Devan Markcus Wong fired at police on Dec. 6, 2011 while fleeing to West Kelowna after robbing Premier Jewelry and Loan. Wong managed to escape by carjacking a nearby motorist at gunpoint and forcing the driver to take him away from the scene.
Wong, who appeared in court by video conference today, pleaded guilty to four separate charges, including armed robbery, kidnapping with a weapon, disguising face with intent to commit an indictable offence and aiming a firearm at two police officers. Wong will be back in court May 13 for a pre-sentence report, and will then be scheduled for a final hearing to decide his sentence.
Wong surrendered himself to the Kelowna RCMP detachment last February, two months after committing the robbery, assault and kidnapping.
