Suspect arrested in Shuswap on swimming platform in middle of lake

A 32-year-old Chase man tried to get away from police after threatening members of his family by swimming to a platform in the middle of Little Shuswap Lake.

Officers were called to the family’s home on Squilax Anglemont Road at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24, after a man threatened to harm other family members, according to an RCMP media release.

The suspect said he would use a weapon so the heavily-armed Southeast District Emergency Response Team was called.

“Upon police arriving, the man had swum from the home to a swimming platform in the middle of the lake,” reads the release. “Officers had to travel by boat to reach him.”

The man, who RCMP said was “suffering from mental health concerns,” was taken to hospital.

No word from police on charges as the investigation continues.
