NSL roundup: AFC Toronto snaps two-game winless skid with 2-0 win over Calgary Wild

TORONTO — Zoe Burns scored her first two goals of the season in leading Northern Super League-best AFC Toronto to a 2-0 win over Calgary Wild FC on Saturday at York Lions Stadium.

Burns opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time when she took a feed from Esther Okoronkwo and took a shot from just inside the box that deflected in off a Calgary defender.

Burns then made it 2-0 in the 47th minute. She fired the ball in from just inside the box again after a teammate got her head on the ball from a cross off a free kick from Emma Regan.

It was just the second start of the season for Burns as Toronto (11-6-2) snapped a two-game winless skid (0-1-1).

Meanwhile, Calgary (6-10-2) suffered its second straight loss on the heels of a two-game winning streak.

RISE 2 ROSES 1

Lisa Pechersky’s goal in the 45th minute snapped a 1-1 tie and lifted the Vancouver Rise (8-5-5) to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Roses (8-6-4) at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.

Tanya Boychuk scored in the 16th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, but Holly Ward tied the match with a goal seven minutes later.

Vancouver controlled 51 per cent of possession and outshot Montreal 13-12 (4-3 on target).

Vancouver had more corners (5-4) and took two of the three yellow cards handed out.

With the win the Rise move into sole possession of second place with the win, one point up on the Roses and Ottawa Rapids.

Toronto visits the last-place Halifax Tides on Sept. 6, while Calgary heads to Vancouver on Sept. 6. Montreal visits the Ottawa Rapids on Sept. 7.
