Tourists and locals have been drawn to a novel attraction along the Trans-Canada near Revelstoke for decades.

The Enchanted Forest is nestled in old growth trees where pathways take visitors through a fantasy world featuring hundreds of painted fairytale figurines.

The figurines were shaped out of cement by Revelstoke artist Doris Needham during the 1950s without the use of molds or forms, and while the art pieces are creative, they are viewed by some as creepy looking.

Vernon resident and photographer Ryan Van Veen took his niece and nephew to The Enchanted Forest for the first time earlier this month.

“Some of the figurines are incredible but many of them are nightmarish,” he said. “I loved taking the kids there and they loved it. They have some really neat setups, but it surprised me how freaky some of the figurines are.”

On July 1, 1960, tourist attraction officially opened to the public and since then more than 3 million visitors have stopped to enjoy the magic, according to its website.

The more than 350 figurines include elves, storks, fairies and characters from Mother Goose rhymes, often positioned in concrete fairytale huts kids can go into.

Located at 7060 Trans Canada Hwy, The Enchanted Forest, and its twin attraction the Sky Trek Adventure Park, are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
