Two day suspension for BC nurse who fiddled with expenses

A BC nurse who fiddled with his expenses and falsified documents has been suspended for two days.

According to a Sept. 4 BC College and Nurses and Midwives decision, licensed practical nurse Sukhveer Uppal, who goes by the name Sunny, falsified documentation and claimed reimbursement for expenses he did not incur. The decision also said there were issues with him being absent from work.

“Fraud undermines this trust and is a breach of the professional responsibility and accountability and the ethical practice nursing standards,” the regulator said in the decision. “The establishment and maintenance of trust is foundational for any regulated professional, such as a nurse or midwife, be it with their patients, their colleagues, or their employer.”

The decision gave no indication of how much money Uppal made by making the false expense claims, but said the incident happened on July 20, 2023, in Burnaby.

Uppal signed a consent agreement admitting to his behaviour.

Along with the suspension, he will also have to undergo remedial education in ethics and professionalism.

The regulator said it is satisfied that the terms will address the professional and practice concerns that arose and will protect the public.
