Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas makes his season debut against Chiefs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Standout left tackle Andrew Thomas made his season debut for the New York Giants on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs, his first game in nearly a year, though his participation was limited by design.

Thomas, 26, had not seen NFL action since hurting his right foot Oct. 13 and undergoing surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury.

He played the first 26 offensive snaps before being replaced by Marcus Mbow late in the first half of a 22-9 loss. Coach Brian Daboll said 25 snaps was the plan all along for Thomas’ return.

“He came out, from what I understand, just fine,” Daboll said. “That was the next step for the ramp-up for him. Hopefully we’ll be able to get more this upcoming week.”

Thomas opened training camp on the physically unable to perform list with the Giants hopeful he could play in Week 1. Rehabbing and getting ready wound up taking longer than that and James Hudson started the first two games in Thomas’ absence.

Since drafting Thomas with the fourth selection in 2020, the Giants have now gone 23-38-1, with him and 5-20 without him. Russell Wilson was sacked five times in the first two games of the season.

Thomas and Daboll said Friday that the lineman’s status for the Chiefs game could go right down to the wire. Thomas did not take part in the kind of individual pregame workout with trainers observing that would indicate a decision still needed to be made on whether he would be able to play.
