iN NUMBERS: Let’s talk gas prices in Okanagan, Kamloops

The carbon tax has been gone for months and lots of people are feeling the savings, so let’s reminisce about the best topic of small talk when you run out of things to say to an acquaintance: gas prices.

Here are the numbers:

  • 217: Cents a litre was Kelowna’s peak gas price in the past decade, back in 2022.
  • 217: Cents a litre was Kamloops’ peak gas price in the past decade, back in 2022. Who doesn’t love a tie?
  • 82: Cents a litre was the cheapest gas price in Kamloops in the past ten years, back in 2020.
  • 89: Cents a litre was the cheapest gas price in Kelowna in the past ten years, back in 2020. Cheap gas was the one good thing about the pandemic.
  • 136: Cents a litre is the average gas price in Canada, down 11 cents from last year.
  • 15: Per cent of gas prices in Kelowna were taxes in 2025, after the BC carbon tax cut, approximately. 
  • 29: Per cent of gas prices in Kelowna were taxes in 2024.
  • 17: Cents per litre is the estimated savings from axing BC’s carbon tax in April.
  • 5.7: Billion dollars were returned to Petro-Canada’s shareholders in 2024.
  • 2: Per cent is the profit margin for a gas station on fuel in Canada.
  • 10: Per cent is the profit margin on snacks and convenience store items in Canada. If you think you’re getting robbed at the pump, watch your wallet in the chip aisle.
