No significant snow expected for the rest of the week in Kamloops and the Okanagan

Mother nature shouldn’t have any more nasty surprises to throw at Kamloops and Okanagan residents this week following yesterday’s unexpected snowfall.

The snow was supposed to fall as rain in Kamloops and the Okanagan but instead caused some slippery driving yesterday afternoon and into the evening, Nov. 16, before rising temperatures arrived overnight.

Environment Canada meteorologist Doug Lundquist says today’s much warmer than normal weather will be replaced by a return to a typical November weather pattern tomorrow, with showers followed by a break, followed by more showers.

There could be some snow mixed in with that anytime during the day or night this week, but with those above normal temperatures, nothing should stick to the valley bottom.

Daily highs for the rest of the week are expected to range between 4 C and 7 C, compared to an average daily high of 2 C in Vernon, Kelowna and Penticton, and 4 C in Kamloops.

There’s a chance of snow showers for the Okanagan tomorrow night and again on the weekend, but it’s not likely we’ll see any accumulation, Lundquist says.

“It’s going to be a typical fall pattern, but a little warmer than average,” Lundquist says.

Ski resorts in the Thompson – Okanagan are reporting some good early snow bases already this season, with Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton at 44 cm, and Kelowna’s Big White at 117 cm.

Silver Star Mountain Resort near Vernon has yet to post their base.

Big White is scheduled to open early on Nov. 19. Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops is scheduled to open Nov. 21, with 85 cm currently reported at mid-mountain.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
