Brightest supermoon of year to shine over Kamloops, Okanagan
October’s full Harvest Moon is a supermoon and will be appearing bigger and brighter than usual in skies over Kamloops and the Okanagan next week.
The full moon on Monday, Oct. 6, is the brightest supermoon of year as well as the first of three supermoons in a row.
Supermoons occur when the moon reaches peak illumination while at its closest point to Earth, making it appear noticeably larger and brighter than usual.
The Harvest Moon will reach peak illumination at 8:47 p.m., Oct. 6, and the full moon will appear bright the day before and after.
This full moon is closest to the autumn equinox, so unlike other moons it rises about the same time for several nights and creates extended evening light, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Traditionally, the extended light helped farmers finish harvesting crops.
