iN NUMBERS: The vision for the future of ski resorts in Okanagan, Kamloops

The satisfying sounds of clicking your boots into your skis, scanning your ticket at the lift and cutting through the snow might already be in your ears even though ski season is still a ways off in Kamloops and the Okanagan.

To get you hyped up for winter here are some stats on the long-term dreams for some of the most popular ski resorts. It’s hard to say when, or if, any of these things will actually happen, but it’s nice to dream.

Here are the numbers from the master plans at Big White Ski Resort near Kelowna, Vernon’s SilverStar Mountain Resort and Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops:

  • 25: New or improved ski lifts are in the Big White Master Plan.
  • 2,523: Acres of new ski terrain with 221 new runs are on Big White’s vision board.
  • 2: Golf courses have been envisioned for Big White, but if you can’t wait there’s a 9-hole disc golf course already.
  • 88: New runs would bring SilverStar resort from 128 trails to 216 trails.
  • 724: Acres of gladed, wooded area, skiing would be added to SilverStar resort.
  • 220,737: Square feet of built space would be added to the SilverStar Village to accommodate all the new retail, restaurants and operational facilities the resort would like to build.
  • 18,104: Skiers and snowboarders per hour is the goal for upgrading Sun Peaks’ trail capacity, up from the current 15,000.
  • 4,400: Acres makes Sun Peaks the second largest ski area in Canada.
  • 225: Trails is the goal outlined in Sun Peaks’ plan, up from the current 144.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Apex Mountain Ski Resort near Penticton doesn’t have a current master plan.
