Vernon party hosts fined after police discover large gathering

Two Vernon party hosts have been fined for having a large social gathering in their home late Thursday night.

On Nov. 19, the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP received a report of a large social gathering taking place at a residence in Vernon.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers arrived at the location where they found numerous people inside the residence in addition to the 5-10 people gathered on a balcony, according to the RCMP in a press release.

As police officers approached the house, the partygoers quickly disappeared inside and refused to answer the door.

"It’s disappointing to see people taking part in these high risk activities, blatantly disregarding the direction of the provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry," said Constable Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, in the press release.

A B.C.-wide order is currently in effect, preventing any social gatherings for the next two weeks.

"We believe the community overwhelmingly understands and supports the necessary measures that have been implemented to slow the spread of COVID-19. We urge everyone to behave in a safe, responsible manner," Terleski said.

He said they will focus on education and awareness, however should the public choose to disobey health authority mandates, they could find themselves paying for their actions in the sum of large fines.

Two individuals on scene each received a fine under the COVID-19 Related Measures Act. The incident is currently under investigation.

Another poker party host was also fined $3,000 in Kamloops this week for failing to abide by provincial health orders.
