Rise take control of second place in NSL standings with 1-0 win over Roses

MONTREAL — Jessica De Filippo scored at the 10-minute mark and the Vancouver Rise picked up a crucial 1-0 road win over the Montreal Roses on Northern Super League action Saturday.

Vancouver won on the road against another playoff-bound team for the second time this week after defeating the Ottawa Rapid 2-0 on Wednesday.

The Rise (11-7-6) enter the final week of the inaugural season of the Canadian professional women’s soccer league three points clear of Ottawa and Montreal (both 10-8-6) for second place in the six-team league.

Toronto has already clinched first place in the standings while Vancouver, Montreal and Ottawa have the other three playoff spots. The teams will battle in two-leg semifinals depending on the league standings after next week’s games.

The final will be played Nov. 15 at Toronto’s BMO Field, with the winner taking home the Diana B. Matheson Cup.

Rise goalkeeper Morgan McAslan made three saves to earn her second straight clean sheet.

Later Saturday, Meggie Dougherty Howard scored twice as the Calgary Wild defeated the visiting Halifax Tides 3-1 in a match of teams eliminated from playoff consideration.

Grace Stordy also scored for the fifth-place Wild, who improved to 8-14-2.

Syd Kennedy scored for last-place Halifax (3-14-7).
