Shapovalov into quarterfinals at Stockholm Open with win over Borg
Canada’s Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals of the Stockholm Open tennis tournament with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 win over hometown favourite Leo Borg on Wednesday,
Shapovalov, the third seed in Stockholm, had six aces and won 83 per cent of first serve points against Borg, the 22-year-old son of Swedish tennis great Bjorn Borg.
Borg, who earned a wild-card entry into the main draw of the ATP 250 tournament in Sweden’s capital, struggled to pick up wins on serve. He faced 18 break points in the match, defending 11 of them.
The Swede appeared to take control of the game in the second set, when he had two of his three breaks in a four-game winning streak to close off the set.
But Shapovalov, who entered the tournament ranked 23rd in the world, made short work of his opponent in the third set. He won five straight games after both players opened with a hold.
The 26-year-old Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., will next face either Jacob Fearnley of Britain or another Swedish wild card in Elias Ymer.
Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo is out of the Almaty Open tennis tournament after losing 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-4 to Australian qualifier James Duckworth in second-round action Wednesday in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Duckworth overcame 22 aces from fourth seed Diallo and did not face a break point in the match that lasted just over two and a half hours.
Diallo was accurate on 82 per cent of his first serves and won 74 per cent of his first service points, but he faced eight break points. While he fended off seven of them, Duckworth scored a crucial break to go up 4-3 in the third set.
Duckworth will face third seed Flavio Cobolli of Italy in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 event.
It was the first ATP main-draw meeting between the players. Diallo defeated Duckworth in qualifying at the 2022 National Bank Open in Montreal.
Diallo, ranked 35th in the world, saw his record drop to 28-22 on the season.
Fourth-seed Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., faces Hungary’s Dalma Galfi in second-round action at the Japan Women’s Open on Thursday (Wednesday night ET) in Osaka.
