Residents rescued from apartment fire in downtown Vernon

Firefighters rescued residents from the upper floor of a building in downtown Vernon this morning.

Vernon Fire Rescue Services were called to the fire in the 3100-block of 30 Avenue around 8:41 a.m. today, Oct. 17, according to a press release from the City of Vernon.

The fire started in an apartment on the third floor and around four or five units were affected.

Firefighters had to pull out “ground ladders” and place them up to the windows before rescuing several people from the building, the city said.

Crews knocked the blaze down quickly so it didn’t spread to nearby buildings. Responders are still on the scene salvaging, overhauling and extinguishing hot spots.

The area around the fire on 30 Avenue is still closed, but it should reopen later this morning. Officials are asking the public to avoid the area so emergency crews can work.

Emergency Support Services are helping residents who have been displaced by the fire.
