What to expect from the tax collector

VERNON – The average Vernon home will be shelling out an extra $30 in taxes this year.

City of Vernon council approved the 2014 financial plan this week, which brings with it a 3.2 per cent tax increase. Of that, 1.9 per cent will go toward infrastructure upgrades and the remainder to the city’s operational costs.

Councillor Bob Spiers, normally a vocal critic of financial plans, is content with the increase.

"It's one of the best budgets I've seen in the six years I've been on council. It didn't contain any fat that I could find,” he says.

Last year’s budget involved a 3.9 per cent increase.
