Jordon McDonald through to men’s final at curling Olympic pre-trials

WOLFVILLE — Jordon McDonald advanced to the men’s final at the Home Hardware Canadian Curling Pre-Trials with a 5-4 semifinal win over Scott Howard in Friday’s early matchup.

Howard, from Navan, Ont., appeared to have control of the match when he scored one point in the sixth end to take a 4-2 lead.

But after a blank seventh end, Winnipeg’s McDonald scored one in the eighth then posted back-to-back one-point steals in the ninth and 10th for the comeback victory.

McDonald will face Winnipeg’s Braden Calvert in the opening match of a best-of-three final Friday evening.

Also Friday, Victoria’s Kayla MacMillan was set to face Ashley Thevenot of Martensville, Sask., in a women’s semifinal. The winner will face Edmonton’s Selena Sturmay in a best-of-three final starting Saturday.

The men’s and women’s winners of the pre-trials move on to the Montana’s Olympic Curling Trials next month in Halifax.
