McGuinty says first-ever defence industrial strategy will be released by Christmas

OTTAWA — Defence Minister David McGuinty says Canada’s first-ever defence industrial strategy will be released after the Nov. 4 federal budget and will be made public no later than Christmas.

The document will map out the federal government’s plan to build up the domestic defence manufacturing sector.

McGuinty says it will lay out Canada’s needs, sovereign capabilities and sectors where it has a comparative advantage.

He says Ottawa will be “placing a premium on dual-use technologies” that serve both civilian and military needs.

McGuinty made the commitment during an address at the Empire Club of Canada in Toronto on Friday.

Industry observers are watching and waiting to see how Ottawa will approach the industrial strategy — and whether it will amount to the government picking winners and losers.
