Who needs a trip to Mexico for the holidays when there is ‘Apexico’

An idea that began as a whimsical comment over supper has caught on with members of the public looking for some positivity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Christy Shular and her family are big fans of Apex Mountain Ski Resort west of Penticton. They own two condos in the Apex community and spend a lot of time on the hill.

Christy says the family was discussing the fact they wouldn’t be able to go to Mexico this year during a “taco Tuesday” supper at their condo when Christy’s husband said, “who needs Mexico when we have Apexico?”

“We all thought that was a pretty cool idea, so we turned to our daughter Lauren who’s the artist in the family and said, ‘you should draw something up. I’m pretty sure we could make some T-shirts and sell this. It would be fun,'" Christy says.

The idea took on a life of its own last week after Lauren developed a logo and T-shirts were printed.

“My husband had a few connections from his work in the golf industry. We got some T-shirts made up and began advertising on social media, and we’ve just been inundated. It’s been awesome,” Christy says.

She’s busy putting in an order for more T-shirts to fill the steady demand.

The family is also looking at producing toques.

“It’s a fun way to see a positive side in this whole pandemic. Let’s go outside, have some fun and create our own ‘Apexico.’  We’re trying to get some fun happening and to get people to see past COVID-19 problems,” she says.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
