Gun report prompts lockdowns at Kamloops schools

Police locked down North Kamloops schools this afternoon after a report of someone with a gun.

Kamloops RCMP responded around 2 p.m. today, Nov. 6, and kept students inside for more than an hour, but it’s not clear whether police arrested anyone or whether a firearm was found.

“Out of an abundance of caution the nearby schools were kept on a hold and secure until police could gather more information related to the call. We are working with our School District 73 partners throughout this incident,” Cpl. Dana Napier, detachment spokesperson, said in a news release.

Though more than one school was locked down, the focus of the police response centred on NorKam Secondary.

RCMP and Kamloops-Thompson school district asked the public to stay clear of the school throughout the afternoon while armed police scoured the building. The school day was over by the time the lockdown was downgraded and students could leave.

It came hours after two students, who are expected to recover, were struck by a vehicle while getting off a school bus in front of the school. There’s no indication the incidents were related.

RCMP did not respond when asked about arrests or whether the report of a gun was legitimate.
