Police arrest suspect in Kamloops hotel fire

A suspect has been arrested in connection to a suspicious fire at a Kamloops hotel last week.

Kamloops RCMP responded to the Thompson Hotel at 650 Victoria Street to assist Kamloops Fire Rescue with a fire Dec. 3 around 1:03 a.m., according to a release.

Police obtained video surveillance which showed that a suspect had intentionally started the fire before fleeing the area.

A description was provided to all officers and at 3:20 that morning and a suspect matching the description was found possessing evidence that he was responsible for starting the fire.

The 39-year-old Kamloops man will appear in court to face charges for this incident.

“It is very disheartening that someone would intentionally start a fire like this in our community putting others at risk for no apparent reason,” Sgt. Darren Michels said in a release.

“We are certainly very happy that this fire was observed early and didn’t have time to spread.”

Anyone with any further information regarding this fire are asked to call the Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-2477.
