Robbery suspect breaks through COVID barrier to assault Osoyoos store employee

A suspect is in custody after a robbery and assault at a store in Osoyoos yesterday morning.

Officers were called at around 10:55 a.m. yesterday, Dec. 6, to a store in the 9100 block of Main Street to a report of a robbery, according to an RCMP media release. RCMP do not identify the business.

Police say a lone man tried to buy some cigarettes and when his transaction didn’t go through, he leapt across the counter, breaking the COVID barrier and assaulted the employee.

He ran off with several packages of smokes.

RCMP do not say how badly the employee was hurt.

“Our officers located the man at a residence however he quickly ran in an attempt to avoid capture,” states Sgt. Jason Bayda, Media Relations officer for the South Okanagan RCMP.  “Thankfully through our officer’s determination the man did not get far and was quickly taken into custody.”

RCMP do not say what charges the suspect is facing.
