Big White latest ski resort to delay opening day

[byline]

Big White Ski Resort has pushed back its opening day, but it isn’t the only mountain around to do so.

Big White was going to open on Nov. 27, but it has decided to push the date back and do another assessment on Dec. 1, according to a press release from the resort.

The Kelowna area resort has seen some snow, but it needs another 50 centimetres in order to fire up the lifts and open the runs.

Sun Peaks Resort near Kamloops announced last week that it had to push its opening day from Nov. 22 to Nov. 27.

SilverStar Mountain Resort near Vernon had to push its opening day from Nov. 28 to Dec. 5.

Apex Mountain Resort near Penticton plans to open, Dec. 5.

All four ski resorts are reporting less than a metre of snow base as of Nov. 24.

Big White has a snow base of 24 cm with 16 cm falling over the last week. There isn’t much snow in the forecast until Thursday, Nov. 27, when the resort could get a few centimetres of snow.

SilverStar hasn’t released any figures on snow fall yet, but there’s snow visible on the mountain webcams and some flurries in the forecast.

Sun Peaks has a 51 cm snow base and some more snow in the forecast later this week.

Apex is reporting a 30 cm snow base with some precipitation in the forecast for the middle of the week.
