Plante scores OT winner, USNTDP wins Prospects Challenge over CHL

LETHBRIDGE —
Victor Plante scored at 5:53 in overtime as the United States National Team Development Program won the CHL-USA Prospects Challenge over the Canadian Hockey League on Wednesday.

The USNTDP claimed the first matchup of the two-game set 4-2 on Tuesday as Brady Knowling made 42 saves.

The CHL prospects then rallied from two goals down to win 4-3 in Game 2 on Wednesday, forcing 20 minutes of 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime.

Xavier Villeneuve — with the regulation-time winner — Alessandro Di Iorio, Caleb Malhotra and JP Hurlbert all scored for the CHL. Zachary Jonvanovski made 24 saves in regulation, and Daxon Rudolph provided two assists.

Plante, Jamie Glance and AJ Garcia replied for the USNTDP in regulation. Luke Carrithers stopped 33 shots.

The USNTDP jumped out to a 3-1 advantage 1:07 seconds into the second period, but Malhotra responded with a short-handed goal 37 seconds later to cut into the lead.

Di Iorio tied it later in the second before Villeneuve redirected the go-ahead goal on the power play at 16:49 in the third.
