Calgary Flames announce two-year extension for general manager Craig Conroy

CALGARY — The Calgary Flames announced two-year contract extensions for general manager Craig Conroy and other senior management Friday, even though the team said the extensions were signed before this season began.

Conroy, 54, was promoted from assistant general manager to GM in 2023 when Brad Treliving left for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to continue leading this hockey club,” Conroy said Friday in a statement.

“We have made important strides the last two years, and I believe in the culture of this team. We are excited about the future, and we are all committed to do everything we can to bring success to this franchise.”

Club president Don Maloney, senior vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager Dave Nonis and vice-president of hockey operations and assistant general manager Brad Pascall also joined Conroy under contract through the 2027-28 season.

Calgary’s new arena, Scotia Place, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2027.

Conroy of Potsdam, N.Y., played nine of his 16 NHL seasons with the Flames before entering the managerial ranks.

The Flames (8-14-3) ranked second-last in the NHL heading into Friday’s game against the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

Calgary’s record since Conroy’s promotion to GM was 87-80-22. The Flames haven’t made the playoffs since 2022.

They narrowly missed the post-season this year on the wrong end of a tiebreaker for the Western Conference’s final wild-card spot.

Calgary’s senior management group also includes assistant GM Peter Hanlon, senior director of hockey operations Mike Burke and Jarome Iginla, who is a special adviser to Conroy.
