Defending champion Germany blanks Canada at FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup.

MADURAI — Captain Ben Hasbach scored three goals Saturday to help defending champion Germany blank Canada 7-0 on Day 2 of the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup.

Germany has won the field hockey tournament seven times and finished runner-up twice.

Jonas von Gersum, Ferdinand Steinebach and Alec von Schwerin also scored for Germany with Quirin Nahr adding a goal via penalty corner. The Germans blanked South Africa 3-0 in their opener.

Top-ranked Germany (2-0-0) tops Pool A with Canada (0-2-0) bottom of the four-team group. The 14th-ranked Canadians, who lost 4-3 to No. 22 Ireland on Friday, take on No. 10 South Africa (1-1-0) on Monday.

Toronto’s Leighton De Souza scored twice against Ireland with Gurnoor Bhullar of Surrey, B.C, adding the other goal.

The 24-team tournament, which runs through Dec. 10 in Madurai and Chennai, India, is open to players born on or after Jan. 1, 2004.

The Canadians qualified by finishing second at the 2024 Junior Pan American Championship in Surrey, B.C.

Canada, finished 16th at the 2023 Junior World Cup and was 13th in 2021. Its best finish in its seven previous trips to the tournament was eighth in 1982.
