iN NUMBERS: British Columbians have AI anxiety

You might have heard about people theorizing that the AI industry is an economic bubble, maybe your relative sent you an AI-generated video of a dog saving a baby that they were convinced was real.

While a lot of British Columbians use AI, most of them think there are going to be several negative consequences and little benefit for humanity as a whole. 

Here are the numbers from an Angus Reid survey: 

• 40: Per cent of British Columbians use AI at least once a week. 
• 35: Per cent of British Columbians said they expect to use AI more over the next three months.
• 71: Per cent of British Columbians used ChatGPT for personal use in the past few months, making it the most popular AI service with Google’s Gemini in second place at 35 per cent. 
• 96: per cent of British Columbians said AI-generated misinformation will become one of the biggest challenges facing society in the future. 
• 93: Per cent said that AI poses a serious risk to personal privacy. 
• 28: Per cent of British Columbians said AI is going to make life easier for everyone. 
• 86: Per cent of British Columbians think AI needs to be regulated by the federal government.
• 30: Per cent of British Columbians used AI for health and wellness advice. 
• 2: Per cent of British Columbians used AI for fashion advice. 
• 42: Per cent of British Columbians said AI platforms are at least somewhat trustworthy when it comes to news and current events. 
• 67: Per cent of British Columbians said they can usually tell when something is AI-generated.
