Plan to develop Kamloops’s Tranquille Sanatorium site sent to ALC

Kamloops city council is sending a new proposal to develop the former Tranquille Sanatorium and surrounding farmland to the agricultural land commission.

Council gave a green light to the proposal during the Tuesday, Dec. 15, regular council meeting. The subject property is located in the Tranquille on the Lake neighbourhood on the north shore of Kamloops Lake, according to council documents.

British Columbia Wilderness Tours Inc. has submitted an Agricultural Land Reserve application to adjust what is permitted on the site in order to build a "a sustainable agri-community," according to the documents.

The plan proposes planting orchards and vineyards with the goal of developing a destination winery above Cooney Bay overlooking Kamloops Lake. The development would include family-oriented homes and a regional community park at Cooney Bay on the proposed 190 hectares of land.

"Opportunities for preserving historic buildings and features will be reviewed in conjunction with future Official Community Plan and rezoning applications," according to the documents.

British Columbia Wilderness Tours Inc. has made several applications to council dating as far back as 2006.

If the application is approved by the Agricultural Land Commission, the matter will come back to council for an Official Community Plan amendment.
