Veteran winger David Choiniere leaves Forge after seven seasons with CPL powerhouse

HAMILTON — Forge FC has confirmed the departure of winger David Choiniere after seven seasons with the Canadian Premier League powerhouse.

The 28-year-old Choiniere has been linked to expansion FC Supra by Quebec media.

Choiniere, whose younger brother is Canadian international Mathieu Choiniere, made 191 appearances across all competitions with Forge, recording 31 goals and 27 assists.

Choiniere helped Forge to four CPL championships (2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023) and scored some memorable goals for the Hamilton-based side.

He scored the club’s first-ever CONCACAF competition winner in 2019 (against Guatemala’s Antigua GFC) and became the first CPL player to score in the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2022 (against Cruz Azul in a 3-1 loss at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium in 2022). Choiniere also scored in both the 2019 and ’22 championship games.

“David’s impact on this club has been immense,” Bobby Smyrniotis, Forge’s head coach and sporting director, said in a statement. “He’s a Day 1 player and one of the cornerstones of how we started in 2019.

“Over his seven years here, he lived through all of the big moments of this club and has been at the forefront of so many of them, from our early CONCACAF victories to scoring in CPL finals. When you think about Forge’s big games, David has always been there.”

Forge announced the departure of defender Malik Owolabi-Belewu last week.
