Alouettes extend quarterback Davis Alexander one year, through 2028 season

MONTREAL — Davis Alexander was years away from his contract expiring, but he still wanted to extend his stay in Montreal.

The Alouettes signed their starting quarterback to a one-year extension Tuesday, keeping with the team through the 2028 season.

“We both wanted to get something done. I know I want to be here for a really, really, really long time,” Alexander told reporters. “I love this city, love this organization.”

“It just made sense. Still kind of kept a team-friendly deal and we were able to still keep a lot of the guys that make us successful,” he added. “It also proves that, if there was any doubt, there’s no other place I’d rather be.”

Alexander is coming off a historic CFL season, his first as a full-time starter.

The 27-year-old from Gig Harbor, Wash., went a perfect 7-0 in the regular season, extending his league-record undefeated start to a career to 11-0. He then led Montreal past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the playoffs to reach the Grey Cup.

Montreal lost 25-17 to the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the title game as Alexander, hampered by a recurring hamstring injury, threw three interceptions.

Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said the team wanted to reward Alexander after a great season.

“When he signed his contract, he was ninth in the league among starting quarterbacks (in salary), so we wanted to adjust things because he missed a bit of time last year, and there were a lot of bonuses in his deal,” he said. “We wanted to reward him, and knowing as well that we had the possibility of adding another year to the contract, as a GM, when you look at all that, you can plan not only for the 2026 season, but you can start looking ahead to 2027-28 as well.”

The shifty, explosive QB finished the regular season with 2,024 passing yards — on 72.5 per cent completions — 10 touchdown throws and three interceptions in seven games. He missed multiple stretches because of the hamstring issue, and the Alouettes went 3-8 without him.

“I know especially after last season that the team’s always going to have my back,” Alexander said. “After the ups and downs of last year with the injury, that they stood by me and that they’re putting their trust in me, it means the world.”

The Alouettes had signed Alexander to a three-year extension last off-season and later traded veteran and 2023 Grey Cup MVP Cody Fajardo to Edmonton, handing the offence to the young starter.

Alexander began the 2024 season as Montreal’s third-string quarterback. With Fajardo hurt, he came off the bench to replace a struggling Caleb Evans and led the Alouettes to a second-half comeback in a 20-16 win over the Roughriders in Week 8. He went 4-0 as a starter the rest of the season.
